i'm honestly happy to be here. i t ' s j u s t s o s o w o n d e r f u l .
the edges of his lips were pulled down in a disapproving frown. so much for getting away from the ocean, carter whispered before emitting a small sigh. he continued to trudge across the sand and towards the water, in the same slow pace he had created earlier. a few people were scattered around him, but carter took no notice to them. he was momentarily lost in thought. suddenly, showing up at a new school for his senior year of high school didn't make as much sense as it had when he had convinced himself to leave his home. but, just like the fact that it was still on the pacific coast, the students at canterbury had seemed to notice him just as much as those at his own school. way to go, buddy.
carter's chest expanded slowly as he took a deep breath in, smelling the salt of the ocean, which was now just a few feet away from him. he had paused, his blue and white van tennis shoes sunk slightly into the sand. glancing at the teen from bottom up, he was dressed rather well today. carter wore dark navy, straight-legged, denim jeans and a long-sleeved, black sweater pulled over top of a light blue dress shirt. the collar of the dress shirt was exposed over top of the sweater's head, and the sweater's seems were white. the teen crossed his arms across his chest, watching a sailboat in the far distance as it made it's way along the seemingly endless horizon.

Jackie had a pair of bermeuda shorts on, that were decked with black, grey and dark purple stripes criss-crossed in a plaid pattern. The shorts rested just above her knees, and her feet sported a pair of thin black flip-flops. Her brunette hair was down and blowing gently with the breeze that rolled off the ocean. Salty air mixed with the fresh air as she walked from the parking lot into the sand of the beach. The sun was just beginning to set and it was beautiful, the sky was starting to fill up with pinks, oranges and reds. She hadn't been to the the beach in so long, since living in arizona the closest thing to the beach, was the pool that she had in her backyard. She had a grey zip-up hoddie on top, and she had her hands stuffed in the pockets of her hoodie. She saw a teenager about her age, or so- standing near the ocean's edge by the water. He looked familiar, as in he looked like he went to CA. She walked closer to see the curly headed boy she walked up along side him and smiled lightly Hey you go to Canterbury right? She asked sweetly, hoping not to startle him or anything. She crossed her arms over her chest, not in a rude manner but because the breeze was slightly cooler near the waters edge.

carter had not noticed the girl's presence next to him until she spoke. a bit taken aback by her.. well, by her talking to him, carter quickly glanced over to the empty space next to him, just to make sure he was really the target of her conversation. feeling a jolt of excitement, he shifted his feet to angel himself a bit more towards her, a small smile creeping up over his lips. yeah, i do. i'm taking that you do, too? carter had never seen the girl around campus, but he hadn't exactly been there long... and he hadn't exactly been watching the kids. keeping his arms crossed to restrain from fidgeting, he bit in the inside of his cheek gently.

Jackie gave a simply smile in his direction her hands still tucked into the pockets of her jackt on her grey zip-up hoodie, Yeah, I go to canterbury; I'm Jackie, She told him, smiling lightly before looking out over the ocean and to the sunset falling behind the endless horizon. She turned so that she was facing him once more, he looked a bit older than her- maybe Junior or Senior? She wondered how long he'd been at Canterbury- she thought she'd seen him there before, but possibly just once; so he was probably one of the newer students. So- how long have you been here at CA? She asked him sweetly, removing her hand from her pocket run her fingers through her hair pushing it back as the wind had messed a majority of it up.

he nodded politely, the side of his mouth pulled into a small smile that he couldn't really control. jackie.. i'm carter, he responded, having repeated her name before telling her his own in hopes that he wouldn't forget it. carter remained at attention, watching her eagerly, and trying his best to play it cool. he wasn't sure if he was failing or not. this, right here, might be the first time a girl has ever talked to you, the thought ran through the back of his mind, causing him to shift his weight nervously and look away from her as she spoke for the second time. he could barely make out the sail of the boat on the horizon any more, and his eyes strained for it half-heartedly for a few seconds as she asked him a question. oh, i've just been here a few weeks... he pulled his eyes back on to her, swallowing his nerves, or.. at least, trying to, what about you?

Jackie smiled when he introduced himself, she gave him a small smile, and then said sweetly, it's nice to meet you carter. For some reason she was getting the vibe that he was nervous, she wasn't totally sure. She'd never really gotten this reaction out of guys when she talked to them, but who knew. It was kinda cute though, she smiled at him softly once more, as she then listened to him tell her that he'd been here at canterbury for just a few weeks, Cool. I've been her for about a month or so, she said a small smile still pulling at the corners of her mouth as she looked at Carter.
He didn't totally seem like the horseback rider type, but a lot of students had been fooling her- just because the way they dressed didn't mean that they weren't a horse person deep down, another small smile lit Jackie's face as she shifted her weight from one flip-floped foot to the other, she then began to speak saying, So- do you ride horses? She asked him curiously.

cool, he responded lamely. his hands were free now, but fidgeting with each other in front of him. inside, he felt like the conversation was going okay. not great, but decent. a small sigh fell from his lungs as she mentioned riding. that was definitely something he was good at. not to make him sound cocky, but horse back riding was pretty much carter's only talent. when it came to organized sports, he was the uncoordinated one tripping over himself. and, if it wasn't that handicap, he was being bashed with whatever type of ball was used in that game: soccer balls, baseballs, basket balls, etc. yeah, i do. that's pretty much the only reason i'm still in southern california— carter shut himself up before he could begin rambling, do you?

The rolling tides of the beach washed up onto the sand, and then proceeded to roll back out to the ocean. The beach was scattered with tiny pieces of seashells, in all different colors shapes and sizes. She stared out over the water, and looked to the horizon- the water continued on for miles and was endless along the horizon, but it was absolutely beautiful. As Carter began to respond to her question, she turned her head and directed her eyes to him as he spoke, a small smile formed on her lips when he told her that, yes he rode horses. When he turned the question around to her, and asked if she rode or not, a smile formed across her face. Horses were her passion, and her favorite topic to talk about. The smile still rested on her face as she began to speak, Yeah- I ride too, I've been riding for almost my whole life, she said to him. She turned slightly and peered out over the water once more before asking him- So, do you ride english or western? She was curious about all the riders here, a majority rode english but there were a few western riders thrown here and there, like her brother and a close family friend of their's Teegan, she rode western too.

carter smiled gently, exposing pronounced dimples. he was happy to hear that she rode, as well. it was really cool to be surrounded by so many horse people, it was just proving to be a huge shame that kids were just as cruel as back in orange county. carter sighed, his voice coming out from behind his smile, sweet, his voice was enthusiastic as he continued, i ride english english.. well, jumpers, technically. what about you? it seems like a lot of the kids here ride english, i mean, from what i've observed, that is. he, again, had to force himself to stop blubbering nonsense. the wind had picked up, and the sound of the gusts blocked out a lot of the outside noise. in his mind, he suddenly thought of his crazy, but good-hearted horse, beau. the smile that had begun to fade from his lips increased again.

Jackie listened to the winds, to the sounds of a few random seagulls flying overhead around the ocean, the sound of the waves crashing against the shore- everything about the beach was peaceful. She turned her head to listen more closely to Carter as he spoke; she smiled as he told her than she rode english. When he asked her about what type of riding she did, she breathed in the salty ocean air before she began to speak, I ride english too, Hunter/Jumpers for me. Yeah- I've noticed that too, alot more students ride english here than western. She said to him, agreeing to the previous observation that he made. So do you have your own horse here? Or are you leasing a school horse? She asked him curiously.

carter, too, liked the tranquility of the ocean. he couldn't say the same about the people whom he grew up around, even though they were on the coast, they were far from tranquil. it seemed that only his parents were sane back home. everyone else was either drunk, fake, obnoxious, or plastic. it was far from entertaining, that was for sure. the ocean had been his escape from a crappy social life all throughout school, for the water was the once place where he could sail. and sailing allowed him to be as free as he could possibly be. sailing and horse-back riding: his motives.
the teen nodded as the girl spoke, tilting his head a bit and squinting his eyes slightly as he opened his mouth, i came equipped with my own beast from home, how about you?
