It felt good to finally be out of the enclosed area of his truck. He really hated driving, especially hauling his horse. And as soon as he finished he had had to go sign up for classes, get his dorm number and all that jazz. Poor Cruz probably was wondering what in the hell was going on. A soft grin split the face of the eighteen year old trainer as he entered the barn, the sound of a young stallion hitting the side of his stall ripping through the enclosed building, causing Kayden to hustle forward. “Oh shut up boy.” Yeah, his voice sounded harsh, but anyone who knew of him knew that there was an underlying definite affection. It didn’t take long for Kayden to gather up his gear and adorn the horse, swinging lightly into the saddle and heading out towards the outdoor arena.
The stallion tossed his head, causing his rider to shift lightly in the long stirrup dressage saddle. He knew the young horse hated dressage, even though he was quite talented in that area, but he also knew that jumping could stress him out after such a long trailer ride, and that was something Kayden did not need. Almost immediately upon stepping foot into the airy out door arena the stallions head went straight down and his haunch flung upwards, a playful gesture on his part.

Kaylin entered the stall, eyes dark as she went to get Puzzle. The morning had been long and hard. All she wanted to do was climb onto Puzzle and go for a ride. She easily found his stall among all the others and spoke a soft hello. She pressed her cheek against Puzzle's as he came forward and hung his head over the door. She ran her hand through his soft mane and kissed his muzzle before slipping a halter over his head. She gently led him out of the stall and to the front of the barn. With quick, easy steps, she walked towards the outdoor arena, leading her young gelding beside her.
As she approached the outdoor arena, she paused, eyes widening slightly. An older guy was already in the arena with a horse she'd never seen before. That wasn't much of a surprise since there were a lot of horses at the academy, but the stallion in front of her was a stunning horse. She walked slowly up to the fence, watching the stallion buck playfully. She rested her elbows on the fence, watching with interest. Puzzle stayed at her side. She jumped when she felt the pressure of the horse's muzzle on her back pocket and laughed. She pulled the carrots from the packet and handed Puzzle one. She considered calling out, but didn't want to startle rider or stallion. She kept a firm hand on Puzzle's halter as she watched.

It made a smile crack across his chiseled face – the feel of the spirited horse letting loose beneath him. You could tell his experience by how he sat, perfectly still with a light hand on the reins, the only reprimand he gave the horse was a light rap with his legs, causing the horse to move forward at a walk. Almost immediately the horse attempted to lift his head back up and begin the bucking routine, but Kayden was quick to correct him, bringing the horse to a trot and pushing his neck long and low, letting the horse come close to dragging his mug upon the dirt packed arena. Within moments the horse was completely relaxed, and with the soft, combing motions the young man used on the reins, the foam leaking from the corners of the horses mouth was gradually increasing. It didn’t take long for Kayden to sense the fact that someone was watching him, and as he pushed the horse into a long strided canter he looked over his shoulder, his eyes straying across the face of a younger girl and coloured horse.

Kaylin laughed softly at the stallion's spirit. She couldn't help but watch with increasing admiration as the man handled the stallion with ease. The foam coming out of the stallion's mouth caused Kaylin to lean farther forward, amazed at the easy way the older guy handled the beautiful animal. As the stallion stretched into a long strided canter, Kaylin let her eyes rove over him. He moved with confident grace, his dappled coat rippling with each smooth movement. Kaylin raised her gaze to meet the far-off glance of the rider. She held up a hand in hello, unsure.

Kayden allowed Cruz to canter out some of his pent up energy on a long rein, allowing himself to settle deeper into the saddle with the horse’s long, comfortable gait. But finally Kayden knew he needed to collect the horse and at least get in some movements he would need in their next horse show. He again nodded to the spectator, ignoring her completely as he focused in on his horse. He gathered the reins, squeezing lightly as he pushed the horse into a round frame. Almost instantaneously the horse’s poll rose and his neck gathered into an impeccable arch, his body completely in the correct frame. Kayden gave the queue the horse knew to pick up a trot, and by moving his left leg slightly back and shifting his left rein almost unnoticeably the horses shoulders and haunches swapped tracks, causing the horse to be moving sideways down the center line. This movement, known as a shoulder in, was a pretty basic movement, but it was still essential to the horse’s development, and would almost certainly be on any upper level dressage test. Once this movement ended another queue was given, again almost invisible. Across the diagonal the stallion changed his leads every three strides, giving him the appearance that he was skipping. Finally, the stallion was given the queue to stop, and Kayden reached down, patting his neck softly, before giving him his head. A short, but good, workout.

Kaylin watched in silence. The easy way that rider and steed worked together was magnificent. She glanced at Puzzle. She had successfully moved through the gaits with him, but hadn't done much else yet. She stroked his muzzle absently for a minute before turning back to the pair in the ring, surprised to see that the rider had stopped near her. She bit her lip. The guy seated on the stallion seemed almost formiddable. She laid a hand on Puzzle's shoulder for support.
"Your stallion is beautiful. What's his name?"

It didn’t take long for the stallion to cool out, and while he was cooling out, Kayden found himself thinking about where he would like to go for their next show. They would do another Preliminary event before they went up to the two star or intermediate level, simply because he wanted the young horse to have another good experience under his belt before he headed up to the larger and more intimidating jumps. But in the middle of his reverie, a soft voice from the girl who had been watching broke through. Kayden turned his head and reached down, stroking the stallion’s lightly damp coat. “Cadillac Cruise. We just got here; he’s not a school horse.” He knew it probably came off really rude, but he honestly didn’t mean it rude, he just didn’t want the young girl getting any ideas about riding the magnificent stallion. Plus – anyone who attempted to get on Cruz would probably be in the hospital anyways. “And thanks, he’s a good guy.” He attempted to soften his words, for he didn’t want to completely shatter the girls self esteem – he somehow managed to constantly do that to people he didn’t know.

Kaylin raised an eyebrow at the rider's brusque tone but shrugged it off. She didn't much care if he liked her or not. She was here, and he'd have to deal with it. Yup. That's fifteen-year-old logic for yah. She leaned against Puzzle, arms crossed across her chest. A brunette curl fell forward and she quickly swiped it behind her ear. She thought about his quick, slightly harsh words. He seemed to be warning her against thoughts of ever riding his stallion. She scoffed, suddenly angry.
"I wasn't even thinking of riding him. I have my own horse, thanks very much. Where do you get off, acting like you own the world? Excuse the pun, but you should get off your high horse." She paused and red tinged her cheeks. Shit. She just had to go and open her mouth. Someone insulting Puzzle was one of the only things that could get her really pissed and he'd gone and done it. Grrrrrrrreat. "Sorry," she muttered.

It didn't surprise Kayden that his young stallion was impatient. He hated standing still, wasting time - like rider like mount you could stay. But Kayden's attention was momentarily disturbed from the handsome irish horse while the young girl, of whose name he knew not of, went on a self embaressing rampage. A small flicker of amusement scanned across Kayden's mix hued eyes and he reached forward, swinging one leg over the broad back of the seventeen and a half hand, well muscled animal. "Woah. Take a chill pill firecracker." His voice was slightly egotistical, but with a shrug of his shoulders he rose his eyebrows, mumbled an excuse me, and shouldered his way through the gate. Cruz on the other hand, was more interested in taking a chunk from the painted geldings shoulder, and it took a rough word from his handler anda light slap on the shoulder to get him moving on without incident. A fiesty pair they were.

Well, shit. She totally and completely loathed the guy. He was an egotistical jerk. Kaylin watched him swing off of Cruz and narrowed her eyes. He was so sure of himself. So confident, cocky. It was as if all that mattered to him was his big stallion. And in all truth, that was probably true. He seemed to think that, since he was older, he was better. Uhm, how about NO? He was a real jerk. And he had just told her to take a chill. Kaylin's eyes widened. Take a chill pill? A. How old was he, nine? B. Excuuuuse me, but no. And when Cruz went to bite Puzzle, Kaylin slid between her gelding and the Jerk's stallion. She sighed in frustration before sliding through the gate, leading Puzzle with her. She pushed herself up and over his firm back using her strong arms and sat easily on his bare back. She didn't need Jerk - yuhp, that was his new nickname - to upset her more than she already was. She held her gelding's reins in one hand and patted his shoulder with her other before using slight pressure from her heels to move Puzzle into a fast walk. With a click of her tongue, Puzzle leapt forward before moving into a smooth trot.
