Caleb sat silently in one of the booths, long fingers drumming on the tabletop. He glanced around, dark eyes sweeping across the room. None of the other tables were occupied, which was just fine with Caleb. It wasn't oppressively silent for the staff was cleaning and cooking and doing what they were ultimately paid to do. The soft sounds of the ovens being open were pleasing to Caleb. He leaned back in his chair, eyes going to outside. Watching in silence, Caleb examined the street.
It was relatively calm outdoors. Many people were either in school or down at the beach. It was already after two. He'd decided to take a late lunch away from all the tourists and students that might be lurking around. School was just a nuisance at a time like this. All anyone talked about was that stupid prom. What was the big deal anyway? It was just an excuse to spend money and dance. Caleb shook his head slowly, running a hand through his hair. Teenagers these days amused as much as annoyed him.
The soft tapping of shoes on wood made Caleb turn his head. His waiter, a small Italian guy, approached the table, looking a bit wary. Caleb cleared the tense emotions from his face and forced a smile towards the guy. The Italian visibly relaxed, realizing Caleb wasn't planning on punching him. A few years ago maybe, but not now. He was finally doing good.
"Sir, what can I get for you?" The guy's voice had an accent.
Caleb glanced out the window as he answered. "I'll get two slices, extra cheese, stuffed crust."
The little guy scuttled away after muttering a bright 'right away.' Caleb sighed and propped his chin on his hand.

The girl walked into Fabio's. She was sooo hungry. As she walked in, she surveyed the place. She saw only one other person in the whole place. The girl, hair held back by a headband and wearing just a black t-shirt and jeans, walked over to the counter. Hi, I'll take just a slice of cheese. Thanks. She handed the cashier the money and turned around. The girl hesitated, the guy was cute, but did she really want to walk up and talk to him?

Caleb waited a moment before turning his head slightly. He watched a good-looking girl, probably a year or so younger than himself, walk slowly across the pizzeria and up to the counter. He watched in silence as she ordered. Leaning back in his chair once more, Caleb drummed his fingers on his knees, pondering. His eyes flitted over her. She looked familiar. She was probably another student up at Canterbury.
He watched her slowly turn around and his eyes met hers from across the room. There was no spark, or fireworks, like in the movies, but his interest was piqued, he'd give her that. He watched her a moment longer before using his foot to kick out the chair opposite him. He raised his eyebrows at her, motioning to the seat once before settling back into his chair, eyes again going out the window. If she wanted to join him, he'd given the invitation. If not, well, he'd survive.

The girl jumped a little as the guy kicked the chair and raised his eyebrows. She debated in her head for a moment. Then gathering up all the courage she could muster, she walked over to the table. The girl looked over at the guy, her face a sign of timidness. She had never been good at this kind of thing.
Hi. I'm Kailee. The girl said, her voice barely audible, even to herself. And you are? Kailee lowered herself slowly into her seat. She thought that she had seen him around Canterbury before but she wasn't sure.

Caleb could see her hesitate out of the corner of his eye. He couldn't keep the wry smile off of his smooth face. He turned slowly and watched her as she began walking over. Pausing once more, she finally sat. He gazed at her for a moment, seeing the timidness written all over her face. He leaned forward, propping his elbows on the table and moving slightly closer.
"I don't bite, Kailee. I promise."
He slowly moved back to lean into the back of his seat. His eyes held hers, his own open and friendly, hers appearing almost afraid. Caleb was honestly surprised. Either this girl was rarely NOT terrified or he was looking extremely good today. Of course, the thought was in jest for, although he knew he was good-looking, he wasn't conceited like those ripper scumbags.
"Caleb. Nice to meet you, Kailee."
The familiar scuffing of his waiter pulled his gaze away from hers as the Italian guy held out three paper plates. Caleb took the plates and set Kailee's down in front of her. Italian Guy scurried over, handing them a handful of napkins each.
"Be good on date, yah?"
Caleb rolled his eyes at Italian Guy and motioned for him to leave. He smiled at Kailee.
"Sorry 'bout him." He shrugged. "Bon appetite."
Caleb lifted his first slice and took a bite, savoring the extra cheesy-ness.

Nice to meet you. Kailee smiled and let out a laugh at his comment on him not biting. She smiled and took a bite out of her pizza. Do you go to Canterbury? Kailee asked Caleb. Kailee felt her face blush instantly at the waiters comment.
She looked over at Caleb. God he's cute. Kailee....don't fall to hard for this guy! Kailee thought to herself. She remembered all to well what had happened when she had fallen for a guy way to fast.
Suddenly a flashback hit Kailee like a ton of bricks............
Shaking her head to get the mental picture out of her head, Kailee looked back at Caleb expectantly for his answer, hoping he hadn't noticed. Her entire body shook at what had just happened.

Caleb nodded slowly, still chewing. He sat in silence until he'd swallowed the piece of pizza before setting his own slice down. He leaned his elbows on the table, clasping them beneath his stubborn chin. His eyes held hers, friendly and warm as ever. He examined her in silence. She was small, but in a cute way. Her thin frame might make her appear to be weak. However, Caleb could see the stubborn set of her jaw, the flash in her eyes, that revealed just how strong she was. He bet she'd had a run in with many Thoroughbreds and had walked away boasting a victory - not in a bad way, however.
"Yeh. I go to Canterbury. I'm a junior."
He watched her pause and something sparked in her eyes, as if she was remembering something. Her sudden far off gaze surprised Caleb. Was he really that boring? But the he saw something else - pain, sadness maybe. He frowned slightly. A shudder passed through her and one of her curls fell out of the headband. Caleb leaned forward, reaching out a hand, tentative. He brushed the curl behind her ear and stared into her eyes. His own were gentle and laced with concern.
"Are you okay, Kailee?"

Kailee looked up into Caleb's concerned eyes. Yea, I'm okay I think. She said, biting her lip. She gazed up at him. As he reached out to touch her, Kailee felt herself want to shrink back, but stopped herself.
Just give this guy a chance! She told herself. What's the worst that could happen? Though she knew all to well all the possibilities.
Cool. Yea, I'm a sophomore. Kailee said, gazing up at Caleb. She tried not to think about how she had just embarrassed herself. Don't humiliate yourself in front of the first guy that you have liked since Andy! Why to go loser! Kailee said to herself.
So, do you ride?

Caleb pulled back into himself, leaning back against the chair. His eyes held hers, wondering what had upset her. He ran a hand through his hair, slightly worried he'd offended her in some way. Her sweet voice pulled him from his thoughts. Eyes intent on her, he took another bite of pizza. Hey, he was a hungry guy. Plus, the pizza was hella good. He smirked.
"Of course I ride. In fact, I ride Hershey. He's an older horse, but he's a sweet guy and follows orders. And you, Kailee? Do you ride as well?"

Kailee nodded as he told her about Hersey. She remembered seeing him in the barn. Yea, I ride. I've been riding since I could walk basically. I ride Stoley. Kailee smiled at the thought of the big stallion back in the stable.
Back home I have a Dutch Warmblood-Thoroughbred stallion named Percy. The girl smiled at the thought of the big horse that she had left at home. I mostly do hunters and equitation. How about you? Kailee asked Caleb.

Caleb waved to Italian guy to bring him a drink and waited a moment for the Coke. He took a long swig before looking back to Kailee. She seemed to be feeling better now, which was a good thing. He relaxed slowly, the worry leaving his eyes. He drummed his fingers on his knee.
"I have a dark dapple grey stallion at home. Tempest. He was a real storm when I started with him and now he'll let me ride him without a problem." He smirked. "Anyway. I ride mostly cross-country."'
